Past studies have shown that before artificial lighting became commonplace, human beings used to have a “segmented sleep” pattern: they would naturally wake up for one to two hours in the middle of two segments of sleep, which they would use for prayer, reading, contemplation, and even socializing.
When people wake up in the wee hours of the morning, they tend to be anxious and mistake it for insomnia, but in fact, it may be the body’s response to natural rhythms. Instead of resisting, try using this time to meditate, write or meditate.
