Drinking coffee, eating sweets, make you gastroesophageal reflux? Research has shown that lying on the left side with the upper body elevated (e.g., using a sloped mattress with a side pillow) significantly reduces acid reflux during sleep.
The study compared four sleeping positions and found that people who lay on their left side with their head and chest elevated were significantly less exposed to stomach acid than those in other positions, including lying on their right side, using a normal slope, or lying flat. Even with the same elevated mattress, acid reflux was still significantly more common when lying on the right side.
