Reading before bedtime to help improve sleep quality? Study Gives Answer
Have you ever wondered if reading a book before bedtime can actually help you fall asleep? An interesting study gives an affirmative answer. The research team randomly divided participants into two groups: one group read books in bed before going to sleep, and the other group did not have any reading behavior. After seven consecutive days of observation, the results showed that 42% of the participants in the reading group reported an improvement in sleep quality, while only 28% of those in the non-reading group felt an improvement, a difference of 14% between the two, showing that reading has a significant positive effect.
Why does reading help you sleep? Experts believe that reading can reduce stress and help the brain relax, while avoiding blue light interference from cell phones or computers, which helps the normal secretion of melatonin. In addition, regular bedtime reading can also gradually establish a “pre-sleep ritual”, so that the body knows that it is time to rest.
However, it should be noted that reading before bedtime is recommended to choose the content of easy, non-stimulating paper books, avoid the use of electronic devices with blue light. If you also have sleep problems, try to open a good book at night, to give yourself a peaceful night.
